Our response to the Culture Secretary’s speech at the Society of Editors Conference

Following the speech given by the Culture Secretary, John Whittingdale at the Society of Editors annual conference on 19 October 2015, David Wolfe, Chair of the Press Recognition Panel, said:

“We note the comments made by the Culture Secretary that he wished to see press self-regulators voluntarily coming within the Royal Charter scheme of recognition.

"The PRP is open to receive applications for recognition from regulators following a UK wide consultation. When the PRP receives an application, we will assess it to determine whether it meets the Charter criteria.

"We have contacted the Department for Culture, Media and Sport regarding the commencement of sections 41-42 of the Crime and Courts Act which provide statutory definitions which underpin the work of the PRP."
